Daniel Roth

The 18k white gold Datomax Khanjar ref. 208

€19.500

Extremely rare example of Daniel Roth 18k white gold Datomax ref. 208, manufactured in circa 2000.

Daniel Roth established himself as an early pioneer of independent watchmaking when he founded his eponymous brand in 1989. Alongside disruptors like Urwerk, MB&F and Richard Mille, Roth laid foundations for today’s avant-garde watchmakers. With distinctive style, fresh design and technical brilliance, Roth quickly became a legend.

A fourth-generation watchmaker, Roth’s technical virtuosity led venerable Audemars Piguet to recruit him early in his career. Following his time at Audemars Piguet, Roth moved to Breguet, where his designs still leave an indelible imprint.

The legacy of the Daniel Roth brand, from the late 1990s through the early 2000s, can largely be divided into three periods: when Roth first established his marque after leaving Breguet in 1989; when The Hour Glass acquired a stake in 1995; and after Bulgari purchased the brand in 2001.

Reference 208 was presented shortly after the acquisition of Daniel Roth by the Bvlgari Group. It was a pleasantly designed timepiece with an 18k white gold case of 35mm x 38 mm and a height of 8.6mm. It contained a GP3100 movement, finely finished and decorated.

The solid argenté dial features a gorgeous Clous de Paris decoration.
The matte silver chapter ring houses generously sized Roman numerals.
The complication on this reference was the large date which was composed of two overlapping discs, one of them in sapphire.
The hands are flame-blued steel.

The sapphire case back also the Khanjar national symbol of Oman, marking this watch as one of those timepieces commissioned and gifted by the Sultan of Oman.
This model definitely keeps Roth’s philosophy of finish and proportion.
